How to Wash and Care for Handmade Crochet Toys Safely

Step-by-step cleaning routines to preserve shape, stitches, and vibrant colors for years to come.

Handcrafted crochet items being washed and cared for

A handmade crochet plushie is not just a toy; it is an heirloom infused with hours of artisan craftsmanship. With proper laundering and care, your DreamLoop companions will stay clean, hygienic, and huggable through years of childhood adventures.

Rule #1: Spot Cleaning Comes First

Unless the plushie has taken a deep dive into mud or food, spot cleaning is usually all that is needed. Frequent full submersion can compress the internal fiberfill over time.

  1. Dampen a clean white microfiber cloth with lukewarm water.
  2. Add a drop of gentle baby shampoo or wool wash.
  3. Dab gently at the spot — never rub aggressively, which can cause surface pilling.
  4. Blot with a dry cloth and allow to air dry.

Full Hand-Washing Routine (Step-by-Step)

When a thorough wash is necessary, follow this artisan-approved routine:

  1. Prepare the Basin: Fill a clean bowl or sink with cool or lukewarm water. Dissolve a teaspoon of mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo.
  2. Submerge Gently: Place the amigurumi in the water and gently squeeze it several times to allow soapy water to penetrate the interior polyfill. Soak for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and rinse under gentle running cool water until all suds are gone.
  4. Never Wring or Twist: Wringing twists the stitches out of alignment and deforms safety eye mountings!
  5. The Towel Roll Method: Lay the toy onto a clean, dry bath towel. Roll the towel up like a burrito and press down firmly to absorb excess water.

Drying and Reshaping

After pressing out the water, gently mold the toy back into its original shape with your hands. Lay it flat on a mesh drying rack in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Never tumble dry or expose directly to scorching midday sunlight, which can fade dye lots.
